University App Rumble Contest Overview

Submissions are now closed. Thank you for all those who submitted ideas.

Listen to our kick-off call to learn more!

Are you an undergraduate or graduate student at a University in the U.S. with a great idea for a mobile application?  If so, then SAP wants to hear from you!  Students are asked to take a design thinking approach incorporating both SAP Mobile Platform and the breakthrough database, SAP HANA.  Ideas can fall under any SAP Industry, and can be business or consumer focused.  For more information on these topics, please refer to the Useful Links.  For the Official Contest Rules, click here.

Students can be any major, either undergraduate or graduate.  Teams are allowed up to 2 members.  Three finalist teams will have the opportunity to work with SAP developers to build out their application.  Students are asked to submit their ideas using the steps of design thinking:

  1. Empathize - Understand the problem at hand
  2. Define - Research the problem and the topic
  3. Ideate - Come up with ideas that leverage mobile technology and real time data to solve the problem
  4. Prototype - Come up with the design and functionality of the solution, using any medium (paper, PowerPoint, white boards, etc.)
  5. Test - Survey the idea among users and gather feedback. Be sure to take advantage of this platform's functionality when performing this step.  You must do this step before you complete your entry.

Students must outline these steps in a double spaced page paper that may be up to 5 pages.  This paper must include an overview of their Design Thinking process, and any major references and citations.  No cover page is necessary.  Additional mediums are also highly encouraged (video, interviews, digital story-telling, etc.).  Be creative!!  The sooner you submit your idea, the more feedback you are likely to receive. The final date to submit an idea is April 8th, but the week leading up to that is crucial for fine tuning.

Students submissions will be judged using these criteria: desirability, feasibility, viability, creativity.  The finalists will be asked to work with SAP to build out their final mobile application.  These finalists will win a trip to Orlando, Florida to compete in the final competition at SAPPHIRE NOWThe grand prize winner of this competition will have the opportunity to continue their engagement with SAP to build out their final application product.

This is going to be a great APP, I have always thought that the retailer will need to move into a "MTO" world sooner or later. From Lindsey's question, I look at more of a collaboration approach where maybe the app can assist with maybe some kind of questionairre and from this the designer part of the APP can then go do its data mining and produce . . . more

"Prizmo" is a mobile app which can scan document and convert to text file. It indicates that scanning a recipe and upload to HANA for text processing is feasible.
"ShopperLite" is a mobile app I found a lot of similarity to yours.

Your video link has something about accessing the product review in store. I think that is a great idea because I did have quite a few situation like that: I would hope to know the opinion of others about something I saw in the shop.

Your idea remind me the analogy to a company: a company has material management. The procurement takes care of input and sales&distribution takes care of output.
Your idea deals with Groceries in a household. Shopping takes care of input and cooking/recipe takes care of output.

I agree! I was just thinking about in my ACCT 6338 / MIS 6338 FI/CO Configuration class that this really facilitates going into the system and knowing which steps to do to fulfill MM to FI, SD to FI and PP to CO to FI processes. Well done, Road Warriors!

Few things to think about: if that parking is taken meanwhile - I think you should look at option of notify immediately as well allow re-check parking again? Also give info about how many spots available? I would love if you can provide a feature to pay & reserve your spot that way someone is guaranteed a spot.

Think about equipment that requires maintenance or uses fluids to run. This device could acquire and send info to advise the company that the maintenance window is in 3 weeks, however, the device sees that X, Y or Z is going on and that maintence should occur sooner to rpevent an outage. Or, in the case of fluids sends the info that Product C is . . . more

One of the aspect our team is thinking is to extend this as a cloud based solution. Want to shout out & ask for feedback : if this intelli HANA Analytics based solution should be in cloud and may be as a "SAAS" solution? Subscription based?
